All of these components lead to better comprehension of text and written communication skills. For these reasons, and many more, spelling does matter!

When? Spelling is introduced as early as kindergarten. More...Less

In primary grades, spelling lesson plans include teaching children how to find patterns in words, including Fry and Dolch words, and sight words. As students get older, spelling lesson plans should be based on individual student needs and words students use, but confuse. Once this is determined, word lists can be created and independently practiced throughout the school year.

How to teach: For years, spelling has had a negative connotation due to many ineffective classroom practices and poor list choices. More...Less

To make spelling meaningful and fun, teachers must first choose appropriate words and then create opportunities for independent practice. The game LetterFall is a perfect example of productive and fun spelling practice.

Play to learn: In LetterFall, students spell each word by using the left and right arrow keys to catch falling letters in the correct order to spell their words. More...Less

Bonus points are awarded for speed and accuracy, as well as for catching healthy, mouse-friendly snacks. If students miss the correct letter or catch the wrong letter, cat paws, mouse traps, or poison; they will lose points! The word and sentence are read aloud and students can listen as many times as needed.

Teaching Tip: LetterFall’s audio component is perfect for English Language Learners (ELLs) and emergent readers. More...Less
