Nevada state abbreviation is NV. The capital of Nevada is Carson City and the largest city in Nevada is Las Vegas.
Residents of Nevada are often referred to as "Nevadans." Nevada's state motto is "All for our country." Nevada's State song is "Home Means Nevada."
The name Nevada is derived from a Spanish word meaning snow-covered. From out at sea, Spanish sailors gazed upon the beautiful mountain ranges of California. They called these mountains Sierra Nevada (snowy range). Sierra Nevada seemed an apt name for the new territory that was being carved out of Utah; but when the deed was done in 1859, the name of this new territory had been shortened to Nevada.
Nevada's state bird is the Mountain Bluebird. The state flower is Sagebrush and the state tree is the Single Leaf Pinon and Bristlecone Pine.
Nevada is ranked 35th in population and received its statehood October 31, 1864.
Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon and Utah are bordering states of Nevada. Three major bodies of water within Nevada are the Colorado River, Lake Mojave and Lake Tahoe.
Nevada's major industries include tourism, mining, and hydroelectric power.
There were 282,131 K12 students in the Nevada public schools in 1996. Out of those students 25,398 were first grade students.
