The capital of North Dakota is Bismarck and the largest city is Fargo. Residents of North Dakota are referred to as North Dakotans. The name North Dakota is from the Sioux Indian word for "friend."

North Dakota is often unofficially referred to as the "Peace Garden State", "Flickertail State" or "Roughrider State". The state song of North Dakota is "North Dakota Hymn." The state motto is " Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable."

The state bird of North Dakota is the Western Meadowlark. The state flower is the Wild Prairie Rose and the state tree is the American Elm.

North Dakota is ranked in population and received its statehood November 2, 1889.

Minnesota , Montana and South Dakota are bordering states of North Dakota. The James River, Missouri River and Red River are major bodies of water associated with North Dakota.

Farming (wheat, barley, oats, and flaxseed), cattle, mining (lignite, soft coal) and electrical power generation are all major industries of North Dakota.

There were 120,123 K12 students in the North Dakota public schools in 1996. Out of those students 8,788 were first grade students. There were also 7,892 K12 public school teachers in the North Dakota public schools system. There were a total of 609 North Dakota public schools in 1996.
