The capital of Ohio and the largest city in Ohio is Columbus. Residents of Ohio are referred to as Ohioans. The state name, Ohio, is from an Iroquoian word meaning "great river".

Ohio is unofficially referred to as "Buckeye State". The state song of Ohio is "Beautiful Ohio". Ohio's motto is "With God All Things Are Possible".

Ohio 's state bird is the Cardinal. The state flower is the Scarlet Carnation and the state tree is the Buckeye.

Ohio is ranked seventh in population and received its statehood February 19, 1803.

Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan are bordering states of Ohio. Lake Erie and the Sandusky River are major bodies of water associated with Ohio.

Ohio's major industries are the manufacturing of steel, cars, airplanes, rubber products, chemicals and plastics, along with farming and mining.

There were 1,844,698 K12 students in the Ohio public schools in 1996. Out of those students 149,391 were first grade students. There were also 108,515 K12 public school teachers in the Ohio public schools system. There were a total of 3,876 Ohio public schools in 1996. (Source: IES National Center for Education Statistics)
