This is one of the beginning skills in literacy to help build the foundation. Kindergarten teachers may begin by asking students to identify initial or final sounds, generate rhyming words, identify spoken words, and identify spoken word parts such as onsets, rimes, and syllables. As students progress throughout primary grades K-2, they will be exposed to activities that build phonemic awareness, like blending and segmenting sounds. Students build on phonemic awareness skills and begin phonics instruction, which is the study of both sounds (phonemes), and letters (graphemes). Phonological awareness and phonics are foundational skills closely linked to reading and writing proficiency.
How to teach: Which Initial Sound? Is a learning activity that can be used during whole group instruction as an introductory activity or review activity. Because of the auditory support, non-readers and emergent readers can use this learning game for independent practice during literacy centers or homework.

For additional support, students can click on the Word button to listen to the word again or the Sentence button to hear the word used in a sentence. When students roll over the picture, the word associated with the picture is read aloud. Students will receive immediate feedback when they answer incorrectly and can attempt to answer until they have selected the correct answer.
